The inventive mind of Hollywood filmmaker Tim Burton has captured the imaginations of more than 100,000 people since an exhibition of his work opened in Melbourne on June 24.

After just five weeks, the Australian Centre of the Moving Image (ACMI) exhibition is on track to become the most popular in the centre's history, with international, interstate and local visitors regularly queuing out the door.

During the previous school holidays, the exhibition drew a record 5,300 people in one day.

The exhibition, part of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces Exhibition, features more than 700 objects - from storyboards and drawings to puppets and costumes spanning Burton's career.

Highlights include the Edward Scissorhands costume worn by Johnny Depp, three of the original Batman masks worn by Michael Keaton, the suit worn by Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, storyboards, models and puppets from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Tim Burton: The Exhibition is open daily at Federation Square and runs until October 10.
